Many say they are too busy to pay forward a little kindness. The truth is showing a small act of kindness takes little time or effort; the payback is priceless! A chance to do a good deed “The Little Way” is all around us. All you have to do is look. In fact, you do not need to look very far. For example, just this morning I read a letter to the editor in the local newspaper. It was from a parent who was giving a pat on the back to a local store who returned a smile to his injured son’s face.
The parent writes in the January 6, 2009 Rochester Democrat & Chronicle: “My son, John, broke his left ankle at a basketball game on Dec. 17, while wearing his new sneakers I had bought for him earlier in the month at Footaction USA. The ambulance crew had to cut his left sneaker and sock to get his foot out (at Aquinas High School) in order to get the swollen ankle and foot exposed. On Dec. 20, the Footaction store at The Marketplace mall was so nice they gave him another pair of black Jordan sneakers. I thank them so much for the Christmas spirit, for John was so happy. This pair of sneakers was one of his presents and the smile returned to his face. Thanks to Footaction and their staff. —JOHN GORDON”
This is a great example of how a local store owner brightened the day of an injured teen. It also had a ripple effect, with the parent writing a public “thank you” note in a local newspaper. The kindness came full circle with the note. As a result of this note, the local store owner will most likely hear about his good deed from his customers. Who knows, he may even see an increase in business as a result of his kindness!
