Yesterday the daughter of one of my dear friends married. Both the ceremony and the reception proved to be a joyous blending of classical and contemporary moments. One such moment was during the marriage service itself when a timeless quote from Mother Teresa about spreading love was shared…
“Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own home. Give love to your children, to your spouse, and to your neighbor… Let no one come to you without leaving better or happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.”
This message made me think about how we tend to make things way more complicated than they need to be. For example, I have read about individuals who spend tons of money on an expressway billboard, and have known individuals who post an indirect message to their loved ones on a MySpace profile. Both did so in an effort to express their love. Yet somehow in the process of trying to impress, in trying to do things in a grand way, the message of love can still get lost, never reaching the intended recipient.
Spreading love is meant to be simple, direct, and face-to-face …. as simple as wishing a drive-up window employee a truly wonderful day before driving away with your cup of coffee. In doing just that recently, I unknowingly touched the life of a Tim Horton employee. With a simple gesture, I received the most brilliant smile in return along with the reply, “Thank you… you just made my day.” Spreading love is simple… it’s about. ” Letting no one come to you without leaving better or happier.”
